One question that I am often asked by readers: Have you ever gone somewhere, really didn’t like it, were persuaded to try them a second time and it was so much better you wrote about them? The answer is assuredly Yes. Anyone who’s read my About Page knows that I am willing to cut a place some slack–God only knows we all have bad days. I have had more than my share of bad days in any given month, so I am willing to give a place another shot, provided the actions weren’t something simply despicable (i.e. racist language or behavior, really shoddy treatment of some customers for no good reason, yelling at someone’s kid, etc.)
I first visited the Backyard Grill on Jones Road thanks to a tip from one of my students over a year ago. While I did not find them to be bad on any level, that particular burger/meal I had was not so delicious or enjoyable that I felt like writing about them. It was good, but not good enough for me to write about. However, a couple of weeks ago, whomever manages their Twitter Account reached out to me and persuaded me to pay them a visit. Although I remembered my last visit to them as being OK but not great, I shook off what I recalled and dropped by for a late lunch after my last class and was glad that I did.
From the photos, you will noticed their theme is someone’s backyard, with a bit of faux countryisms thrown in. There’s a large tree right in the middle of the dining area that includes white light strings on it and a couple of pairs of shoes here and there. The Restaurant has furniture that looks like Patio Furniture, despite it being inside, and a lot of signage reflecting local school sports teams and sports leagues all over. When you look attheir menu, you see a good mix of Tex-Mex and Backyard BBQ/Grilling fare, with some nice breakfast items and a good kids menu too. Since the last time I visited, I noticed they’d really upped their game when it comes totheir craft beer menu. Yes, they have the usual mass produced beers for those who like it. However, their tap and bottles for the great locals (Saint Arnold, Karbach, Buffalo Bayou, No Label) and other well known craft beer brands has filled out substantially from my last visit, and the server was quick to point out that list. I wasn’t feeling like a beer today, but it was good to know that they’ve upped that game.
I was feeling like a burger today, and while they have a nice regular line-up on their menu, I asked my server if they had a good off the menu burger and he told me about two of them: a Hatch Chile Turkey Burger (which I did not try this time) and a nice, big, bad-arsed burger called The Hangover. The Hangover has a 1/3 lb all beef patty, a Breakfast Sausage Patty, a couple of strips of bacon, a Fried Egg (I took mine over medium), Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato and Sriracha mayonnaise; and is served on a large English Muffin. This burger is huge, juicy and a little greasy. It’s spicy, tasty and has a nice kick to it. This is either 2nd Breakfast, or post drinking, or walk of shame having to face the day feeding good. If I’d had this burger the last time I’d dropped in, I would have given the Backyard Grill a write-up back then and I am so sorry it took this long to get it.
The burger comes with fries and I washed it down with a Big Ol’ Dr. Pepper. I didn’t ask for the Calorie Count. Ignorance is bliss sometimes you know… Regardless, it’s one of those burgers that probably hits an atavistic carnivorous chord in the soul of a man with it’s juicy, salty, spiciness. This is just part of the reason why it got a mention on my favorite burgers posting on National Cheeseburger Day a few weeks ago. If you’re a fan of a burger whose flavour also says breakfast, this is the burger for you.
Now that I’ve had a good experience with the Backyard Grill, I am looking to come back soon to try their weekend breakfast (it’d be nice to have that menu on the website, hint hint), their fajitas, and local favorites too. All I can say is that everyone deserves a second chance and I am very glad I gave the Backyard Grill a second chance to wow me with their burger!
